America’s Self-Inflicted Wound: Anger, Incompetence, and the Rise of the Right

The author expresses deep sorrow over the election results, arguing that the nation has elected a depraved, sociopathic criminal as president. While acknowledging the system’s failings, the author emphasizes that the American people have chosen this path, demonstrating a lack of wisdom and decency. This choice will likely lead to a decline in the nation’s ability to govern itself rationally and fairly, a consequence of the president-elect’s character and the actions of his enablers and supporters. The author concludes with a call for Americans to brace themselves for the difficult times ahead.

America did this to itself. The election was like watching a close friend get back together with an abusive ex, except this time, everyone has to date him too. It’s a generational catastrophe, and another decade of this will not be healthy. This is the culmination of years of disingenuous media reporting and clickbait headlines, carving a path for this outcome. It’s almost like the country is asking for exactly what it’s getting: no ACA, tariffs, mass deportations, Project 2025. It’s fascinating that so many Americans thought that one of the most incompetent leaders in modern history, with a disastrous track record by any financial measure, is the guy they want in the White House. It’s a recipe for disaster and a huge price for everyone to pay. Ukraine will fall, another country bordering Russia will be threatened, and when the people who voted for him start complaining about losing their benefits while paying more in taxes, I’m going to remind them that this is what they voted for.

The reality is that a majority of Americans either recognize themselves in this leader’s “values” or are perfectly fine with them as long as an imperfect Democrat doesn’t win. The media, weak Democratic leadership, Trump voters, and non-voters can all enjoy the hell they created for themselves. They deserve no sympathy.

The ironic thing is that the DEI and other inclusion efforts put out by Democrats for years are primarily why we have broader representation of Americans in every aspect of life, yet those voters shifted largely to the Republicans, who are actively working against those efforts. America did this to itself by being far too complacent about voting options for too long. We have to change the makeup of the Democratic party, get the corporate politicians out, and get grassroots candidates in who actually care about the people. It will take time, but we must keep pushing.

We need to continue to push back against the lies and hate, even when it feels exhausting. If you feed someone conservative “news” every day, they will vote Red. If you feed someone mainstream mostly liberal leaning news, they will vote Blue. Citizens United, algorithms, media bias/propaganda, and capitalism got us here more than anything else. We need to stop blaming the Democrats and instead blame the historical actions of Democrats that have allowed Republicans to make it OK to accept foreign interference and misinformation.

The billionaires exploited and manipulated the idiots of the country, and finally got what they’ve been dreaming of. Trump is a symptom of a very ominous disease, and the Democratic party has only fueled the fire by ignoring bread and butter politics. They didn’t push paid family leave, universal healthcare, free college, or student loan relief correctly. They also did a horrible job explaining inflation and the housing market. When you are an incumbent and the GOP is furiously painting narratives about the economy, immigration, etc., and you’re not in these rural townships or suburbs for 4 years pushing legitimate policy, you’re going to lose elections.

America is addicted to chaos. For voters who say they voted for this leader because of the economy, if people were smart about the economy, they wouldn’t keep voting in candidates who give tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations after five decades of failed trickle-down theory.

If you are a white man, self-sufficient, high income earner, and not a senior citizen reliant on Social Security and Medicare, a pregnant woman who has miscarried and denied emergency care, or a Dreamer who grew up in the only country they’ve ever known, you’ll probably be fine. But will your neighbors, your parents, your relatives be fine?

This election was about anger, hate, and lies. The disinformation has been thick. It’s not liberal podcasters being financed by Russia. It’s not liberal news stations paying millions for election lies. Not everyone voted for this leader for these reasons, but the inflammation of non-issues like transgender athletes and migrant crime had an impact, as did the outright lies. America just isn’t smart enough collectively to understand how to fact check.

There’s few candidates who would have won facing a campaign focused on anger, hate and lies. We need to blame the historical actions of Democrats that have allowed Republicans to make it OK to accept foreign interference and misinformation.

America did this to itself, and it’s going to hurt the entire world. The most vulnerable will pay the highest price.
