U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon will not give in to Israeli demand to ‘get out of harm’s way’

As a UN peacekeeper stationed in Lebanon, the recent demands by Israel for us to “get out of harm’s way” have left me perplexed. The notion that our presence is now deemed as a hindrance to their military operations against Hezbollah is troubling. The comments and opinions circulating online only add to the confusion and frustration I feel as a peacekeeper tasked with maintaining peace in a region plagued by conflict.

The idea that because we are perceived as “useless” by some individuals justifies aggression towards us is nonsensical. Our mission as peacekeepers is clear – to keep the peace in areas where conflicts persist. It is disheartening to see such disregard for the important role we play in preventing further escalation of violence and protecting civilians caught in the crossfire.

The accusations that we have not been proactive in our duties, particularly in keeping Hezbollah at bay, only add to the complexity of the situation. While our mandate may not involve actively engaging in military operations, our presence serves as a deterrent to further violence. Standing idly by while attacks occur is not a reflection of our willingness to fulfill our responsibilities, but rather a result of the delicate balance we must maintain in such volatile environments.

The calls for us to leave or to “shoot back” highlight a misunderstanding of our role as peacekeepers. Our job is not to take sides or escalate conflicts but to mediate and prevent further bloodshed. The suggestion that we are complicit in allowing Hezbollah to operate freely is unfounded and only serves to undermine the work we do in promoting peace and stability.

The criticisms and accusations of corruption within the UN peacekeeping forces are baseless and fail to acknowledge the numerous challenges we face on a daily basis. Our commitment to upholding human rights and preventing abuse is unwavering, despite the obstacles we may encounter.

In the face of mounting pressures and demands, it is essential that we remain steadfast in our mission to keep the peace. The safety and well-being of all those affected by conflict must remain our top priority, regardless of the challenges we may face. As a UN peacekeeper, I will not give in to external pressures or threats, but will continue to fulfill my duty to the best of my ability, even in the face of adversity.
