Andy Beshear banning the use of ‘conversion therapy’ on minors with an executive order is truly a step in the right direction. This widely discredited practice, which aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling, has long-lasting detrimental effects on those subjected to it. It’s appalling that efforts to enact a state law banning this practice repeatedly failed in the Republican-dominated legislature. Kudos to Governor Beshear for using his executive powers to protect children from this harmful practice.
Conversion therapy goes against all scientific evidence, and practitioners who push religion and pseudoscience under the guise of ‘ex-gay’ therapy are causing more harm than good. It is heartening to see that many former practitioners have denounced the practice as useless or harmful. The fact that Governor Beshear took this bold step when faced with opposition from the Republican-controlled legislature speaks volumes about his dedication to protecting minors from such dangerous practices.
It’s both heartening and baffling to see a Democratic governor taking the lead in a state like Kentucky, especially in light of the fact that the state overwhelmingly voted for Trump in the 2020 election. But Governor Beshear’s actions speak louder than words, showcasing his commitment to the well-being and protection of all Kentuckians, regardless of political affiliation. The fact that a federal ban on conversion therapy is still missing highlights the urgent need for nationwide legislation to protect vulnerable minors from such harmful practices.
Conversion therapy is aptly described as ‘torture’ rather than counseling, and it’s high time that we recognize the inherent cruelty in subjecting minors to such practices. Governor Beshear’s executive order prohibiting the use of state or federal funds for conversion therapy on minors is a welcome step in the direction of safeguarding the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. The onus is now on other states to follow suit and implement similar bans to protect vulnerable minors from the harmful effects of conversion therapy.

It’s time for all states to recognize the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth and take concrete steps to implement bans on conversion therapy nationwide. Governor Beshear’s executive order sets a powerful precedent for other lawmakers to follow, and I am hopeful that this is just the beginning of a larger movement towards ensuring the safety and protection of all minors across the country. Governor Beshear, thank you for doing what is right and just for the children of Kentucky.
