When I heard about Donald Trump’s comments comparing Kamala Harris to Melania Trump and calling both of them “hotties,” my immediate reaction was one of utter disgust and disbelief.
It’s clear that Trump’s way of attempting to belittle and undermine Kamala Harris’s career and presidential aspirations is by reducing her to her looks alone. He knows he can’t attack her based on her race or gender because his previous attempts have backfired. But by trying to sexualize and objectify her, he is hoping to delegitimize her accomplishments and capabilities as a woman in power.
The fact that Trump would compare Kamala to his wife, Melania, who many believe is more of an indentured servant than a First Lady, is not only insulting but also shows his complete lack of respect for women in positions of authority. It’s as if he can’t handle the idea of a powerful, intelligent woman like Kamala Harris challenging him on the debate stage without reducing her to a mere object of desire.
And let’s not forget how he attempted to backtrack by suggesting that the artist who portrayed Kamala on the cover of Time magazine was too generous in making her look beautiful. His attempts to save face only further highlight his shallow and disrespectful behavior towards women in politics.
It’s sickening to think that the leader of our country is more concerned with making inappropriate and lewd comments about female politicians than with addressing the real issues facing our nation.
