Vladimir Putin ready to ‘freeze’ war in Ukraine with ceasefire recognising recent Russian gains, sources say

As news breaks that Vladimir Putin is considering a ‘freeze’ on the war in Ukraine, it’s hard not to feel a sense of déjà vu. The idea of recognizing recent Russian gains in exchange for a ceasefire sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it? We’ve seen this play out before in Georgia, Moldova, and even in eastern Ukraine a few years ago. And what did it achieve? Simply rewarding Russia with extra territory and time to prepare for the next invasion.

The notion of freezing the conflict and recognizing territorial gains as a way to bring peace to the region seems like a generous offer on the surface. But let’s not be fooled by Putin’s tactics. This is not about genuine peace or resolution; it’s a strategic move to solidify Russian control over Ukrainian territory while buying time to regroup and strengthen their military capabilities.

History has shown us that Putin has a track record of ‘freezing’ agreements and violating them when it suits his agenda. So why should we believe that this time will be any different? The Budapest memorandum, the Minsk agreements – all broken and disregarded by Russia. Recognizing territorial conquest in Europe sets a dangerous precedent that territorial aggression will be rewarded and legitimized.

The proposal to ‘freeze’ the war in Ukraine is nothing more than a ploy to paint the West as warmongers for rejecting what is essentially a capitulation deal. It’s a propaganda tactic to shift blame onto Ukraine for not wanting peace when, in reality, it’s about not giving in to Russian aggression and expansionism.

Let’s not forget that a ceasefire under these conditions would only serve to embolden Russia and set the stage for another invasion in the future. Giving in to Putin’s demands would only empower him to continue his aggressive tactics, rearm, and further threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty.

As much as I understand the desire for peace, it’s crucial to approach this situation with a critical eye. Handing over conquered territory to Russia in exchange for a temporary halt to hostilities is not a sustainable solution. If Ukraine were to agree to such terms, it would set a dangerous precedent that territorial conquest will be recognized and accepted internationally.

It’s easy to see through Putin’s façade of seeking peace when his actions speak louder than his words. The only acceptable outcome is a return to the 2014 borders and a guarantee of Ukrainian sovereignty. Anything less would be a betrayal of Ukraine and a green light for further aggression from Russia.

In the face of Putin’s empty promises and manipulation, it’s essential that the international community stands firm against Russian aggression and supports Ukraine in defending its sovereignty. Let’s not fall for Putin’s tactics of deception and appeasement. The time has come to put an end to Russian expansionism and uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Putin’s offer may seem tempting on the surface, but it’s clear that the cost of conceding to his demands far outweighs the short-term illusion of peace.
