It is particularly troubling to learn that some of the individuals involved in these racist actions have ties to the governor of Mississippi, Tate Reeves. Knowing that members of his fraternity engaged in such behavior in the past, including harassing a black author, raises serious questions about the values and attitudes that are being perpetuated and condoned by those in positions of power. The fact that Reeves openly supported the counter-protesters, even going so far as to share a video of them singing the national anthem, is deeply concerning and sends a dangerous message.
