The idea that the highest court in the land is entertaining arguments that a sitting president could order the assassination of political rivals as an “official act” is beyond comprehension. The very foundation of our democracy is at stake here, and the Court’s willingness to entertain such dangerous notions is deeply troubling.
The notion of absolute presidential immunity is a slippery slope that we cannot afford to go down. Allowing a president to be above the law, to act with impunity and without accountability, is a direct violation of the principles on which this country was founded. The idea that the Court is even considering this as a legitimate argument is a betrayal of the trust and faith we have placed in our institutions.
