While there may be a perception that all boomers are staunch Republicans, the reality is quite different. Many of us remember the Cold War, pre-Trump Republicans, and the fight for civil rights and equality. These memories shape our political views and drive us towards candidates who prioritize social security, Medicare, healthcare, and other critical issues that affect our daily lives.
I have seen firsthand the benefits of quality healthcare, as my mother was able to detect and successfully treat breast cancer early due to regular screenings and advances in medical technology. Both my parents, who are healthy and active retirees, have always been passionate Democrats, and their experiences with healthcare only reinforce their commitment to voting blue.
While there may be a shift in conservative leanings among younger generations, the idea of supporting a candidate who openly threatens social security and Medicare is unfathomable to many boomers. Our generation values these social safety nets that we have paid into throughout our working lives and will do everything possible to ensure their protection for future generations.
Despite the chaos and divisiveness in our current political landscape, many boomers, including myself, are choosing to prioritize stability, democracy, and the rule of law by supporting Biden. The alternative of authoritarianism and continued attacks on foundational democratic institutions is a risk that we simply cannot afford to take. Our votes may hold surprising strength in this election, but they are rooted in a deep commitment to upholding the values and ideals that have shaped our generation.
