It’s not often that we see a judge stand up to the powerful and deny their bid for a trial delay. But in the case of former President Donald Trump, that’s exactly what happened. And it’s a small victory for justice.
This particular case may not be the most interesting or high-profile one that Trump is facing, but it’s still significant. He’s facing 34 felony charges for this case alone. If someone from 10 years ago read that a leading US nominee for POTUS was facing such charges, their brain would explode. It’s a stark reminder of how far we have fallen.
The Republican Party, in particular, has fallen a long way. The rise of the Tea Party in 2010/2011, fueled by racist backlash to Obama’s presidency, set the stage for someone like Trump to come in and take control. He started with the “birther” movement and slowly but surely took over the politics of the party.
It’s incredible to think that there are still people who dismiss these felony charges as insignificant. They say, “Don’t panic, the real cases people might care about are coming down the line!” But how many felony indictments are enough to make people realize the severity of the situation? It’s mind-boggling.
But perhaps what is even more mind-boggling is the fact that Trump’s actions as president, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in thousands of deaths. He dismantled our pandemic response infrastructure just because it was something that his predecessor, Obama, had strengthened. It’s hard to comprehend the level of irresponsibility and callousness.
Yet, despite all of this, Trump still has a base of loyal supporters. They continue to defend him and his actions, no matter how egregious. They claim that the Democrats are the real criminals and that Trump is the one who will save us all. It’s a dangerous level of delusion and blind loyalty.
But it’s not just the Republicans who are to blame. The middle third of the nation, the apathetic voters who don’t care enough to participate in elections, are also a part of the problem. They are like the person who puts their TV back under a sagging ceiling, despite the warning signs. They don’t care enough to do anything about it, and it’s hurting us all.
The fact that there are still people who think that the Democrats are the party of corruption while turning a blind eye to the actions of someone like Trump is a testament to the power of propaganda. It’s a dangerous narrative that needs to be challenged.
In the end, this small victory of a judge denying a trial delay bid is a reminder that justice can prevail, even in the face of powerful individuals. But it’s also a reminder of how far we still have to go. We cannot become complacent or apathetic. We must continue to fight for accountability and justice, no matter how challenging the road may be.
