Hosedrinker As an Israeli citizen, I have felt a mix of frustration and hopefulness regarding the recent news that President Biden has signed an unprecedented order targeting Israeli settlers who attack Palestinians. While this may not solve the deeply rooted conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
One of the key issues that I have with the Israeli political landscape is the presence of extremist right-wing politicians who hold positions of power. It is disheartening to see figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who are known for their bigoted ideologies, occupying significant roles within the Israeli coalition. These individuals have no place in a democracy that values equality and human rights.
For example, Smotrich, who is in a position to shape the country’s budget, has made questionable decisions that have hindered progress in the region. His blocking of tax funds to the West Bank, despite opposition from both Shin Bet and President Biden, only perpetuates a cycle of tension and violence. Similarly, Ben-Gvir, who wields influence over Israel’s police, has been accused of illegally issuing gun permits and restricting freedom of speech and assembly.
These extremists not only hold positions of power but also have a say in matters of national security. Their presence is concerning, especially when comparing it to the political influence of figures like Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, Marjorie Taylor Greene, or Lauren Boebert in the United States. It is heartening to see President Biden taking a stance against such extremists by considering sanctions against them.
Another alarming issue is the continued violence perpetrated by settlers in the West Bank. While it is important to note that not all settlers are violent, the actions of a minority have caused immense harm and suffering to Palestinians. The fact that these acts of terror are committed by individuals from within the Israeli population is deeply troubling.
President Biden’s executive order sends a strong message that this kind of violence will not be tolerated. It is disheartening to see the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office downplaying the need for such measures, calling them “unusual.” This kind of response only underscores the necessity of Biden’s order and the urgency of addressing the issue.
As an Israeli, I wholeheartedly support the sanctioning of these settlers who attack Palestinians. Their actions go against the principles of justice, peace, and coexistence that I believe in. It is vital that they face consequences for their actions and that the international community takes a stand against this violence.
This executive order is not a panacea, and there is much work to be done to achieve long-term peace and de-escalation in the region. However, it is an important step towards holding accountable those who perpetrate violence and terrorize Palestinians. It is my hope that this order will pave the way for more meaningful actions and initiatives to promote dialogue, understanding, and ultimately, a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. As a Jew, I find it deeply troubling that some settlers continue to perpetrate violence and terror against Palestinians. It goes against the values of compassion, empathy, and justice that I was raised with. The fact that these actions are committed by individuals who self-identify as Jews adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
I believe in the importance of creating a society that values coexistence and respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or ethnicity. It is essential to address the root causes of this violence and work towards a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace and equality.
Sanctioning these settlers who engage in violence is a necessary step towards holding them accountable for their actions. It sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. However, it is also crucial to address the underlying issues that contribute to this violence, including the illegal expansion of settlements and the lack of accountability for settler attacks.
It is understandable that there are differing opinions on how to approach the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, it is important for the international community, including the United States, to take a stand against violence and human rights abuses. This executive order is a positive step in that direction.
Moving forward, it is my hope that all parties involved in the conflict will recognize the need for a genuine dialogue and a commitment to finding a peaceful resolution. This includes addressing the grievances and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians and working towards a future where both can live in security, freedom, and dignity.
The road to peace is undoubtedly challenging, and there will be many obstacles along the way. However, I believe that with genuine efforts from all sides and the support of the international community, a just and lasting peace can be achieved. It is my hope that this executive order is just the first of many steps towards that goal.
