By Matt Underwood I’ve wondered the same thing, and have concluded there are 2 groups.
The first are rural imbeciles who literally are THAT dumb that they can’t see a walking cartoon conman. These are the same people who give TV preachers their money and so on.
The second, and larger group, are people who know full well that he’s a liar and a crook and a cheat and everything else, but they don’t care because he’s on THEIR side, and they WANT him to do whatever it takes to “win” their white culture war and make liberals cry.
I’d argue there’s a third group.
Those who are literally brainwashed. Alex Jones, conservative AM radio, Fox News guzzling fools who walk and breathe normal lives like the rest of us. Except they live in an alternate universe where trump is the good guy.
These people aren’t rural imbeciles, they just consume a toxic media diet of propaganda. My parents are there in this third group. They don’t look at any independent web news and watch just enough fox news to believe Trump is amazing simply because fox news said he’s awesome. They’ve grown up in a generation where the news reporters had some guys and backbone and are kinda still clinging to it because they don’t know how to use the internet and computers that well. They trust Fox news isn’t lying bold faced to them and don’t get any other perspective that would tell them otherwise.
Just Limbaugh, Hannity, and (previously) O’Reilly and Glen Beck. The four horsemen, if you will.
They watch just enough fox news to adore trump but not enough, or other fringe web talk shows, to be bat shit crazy. After most of the post election huffing and puffing they admitted that he should concede his loss and move on.
They’re by no means stupid people. They just only get a tiny portion of the news going on (they don’t use the web for any news) and from the little bits of Fox that they do watch believe Trump is some amazing president that’s gotten so much done. Only because Trump said so on twitter and fox news put a picture of it on the news and say “Yup that’s right!”.
Spoilers, guys: You’ll never convince them of anything. You’re competing with a media empire that is decades ahead of you. Your political thoughts, however informed you may be, are worthless to your parents. Sorry.
